"Portuguese Man of War", Physalia sp. or Bluebottle. With thanks to the Hawaiian Lifeguard Association |
This potentially lethal jelly-like fish consists of a small gas filled bladder with tentacles of up to 50 meter! The sting of Physalia is very painful and can cause serious effects, including fever, shock, and interference with heart and lung action. When stung, carefully, pick or brush off any visible tentacles - try not to use your fingers - use your towel, fins, etc. Rinse with fresh or salt water - do not use vinegar. For severe pain, try applying heat or cold, whichever feels better to the victim. Immediate medical attention may be required as their stinging may bring about anaphylactic shock.
