When Dutch explorer Willem de
Vlamingh landed on the West coast of Australia in 1696, he found an island
full of rats. He quickly decided to abandon the island and called it a
"rat's nest", which later turned into Rottnest Island.
However, the animals that Willem de Vlamingh found were not rats, but Quokka's, harmless and friendly marsupials that can still be found on the island.
