The Herschel Space Observatory is on its way to a place 1.5 million kilometers from Earth. It's gone forever on an exciting discovery of our universe. Herschel will look at how stars are born and planets are formed.

Earlier this year it was tested at the ESA-ESTEC Space Centre in the Netherlands. With its 3.5 meter diameter mirror and a lenght of over 7 meters, it's the biggest space telescope ever launched. The Netherlands contributed one of the three onboard instruments: HIFI.
