Panoramic view over the Llano de Chajnantor in the Atacama Desert. At over 5000 meter elevation, this is the site of the future Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The ALMA project is a global cooperation between East Asia, North America and Europe. ALMA will be composed of 66 high-precision antennas, and operating at wavelengths of 0.3 to 10 mm. The main array will have fifty 12-m diameter antennas, acting together as a single telescope. On the left, in the far distance, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) radio telescope is just visible. |
