 Part 1   -   Part 2   -   Part 3   -   Part 4

The four extreme corners of the Australian mainland are formed by:

  • Steep Point (Westernmost Point)

  • Cape York (Northernmost Point)

  • Cape Byron (Easternmost Point)

  • Wilsons Prom (Southernmost Point)

A large section of our itinerary (Perth - Darwin - Cairns - Brisbane - Sydney - Melbourne - Adelaide) consisted of heavily corrugated roads and 4WD tracks, in often very remote regions. Like last year, our preferred vehicle was a Series 3 Land Rover with 4 cylinder petrol engine. The car was in original condition, with the only modification being a long range fuel tank of 46 litres, bringing the total fuel capacity at 120 litres. With an extra 3 jerry cans on the roof rack, this gave us a range of approximately 1200 km (less in soft sand). The vehicle was chosen for its simplicity (very important in remote areas where you're basically on your own to fix your car) and its excellent off road capabilities.

The car was supplied by Len's Landrovers in Pooraaka (near Adelaide), who have extensive knowledge of these vehicles and have a large stock of spare parts to back us up througout the trip.
