Purnululu National Park (The Bungle Bungles)
Purnululu National Park is only accessible by 4WD from April until December (weather permitting). It's a rough drive from Highway 1 with numerous wash outs, water crossings and corrugations. |
The majority of the park, also known as the Bungle Bungles, is impenetrable and can best be seen by helicopter or plane. |
The views on the beehive shaped domes is spectacular! The different layers are clearly visible in the sandstone. |
Large amounts of Spinifex (spiky grass that can penetrate the skin) grow on the top of the hills. |
In the Kija Aboriginal language Purnululu means sandstone. The soft layers are constantly being eroded away by wind and water. |
