Broome is the pearl capital of the world. The pearling industry started around 1860 and attracted divers from many different countries. |
|

The effects of decompression was unknown around that time and many divers died from 'the bends'. Others drowned during cyclones, which hit the coast during the wet season. More than 900 Japanese divers are buried at the Japanese cemetery, a sad testimony of this early history. |
