Many Aboriginals in the central regions of Australia live in poor circumstances. This seems to be a forgotten part of Australia. Photography in communities like Docker River and Warburton is not allowed, hence it is not possible to show the sad conditions in which people live. Many of the people here are unemployed, have poor health and suffer from some kind of addiction. Petrol sniffing by young Aboriginals is a common problem. As a result many petrol pumps are locked in cages. This photograph was taken at Warrakurna roadhouse.

The Gunbarrel Highways runs through the Gibson Desert, one of the most remote areas of Australia. Careful preparation of your vehicle is required to be able to cope with the heavy corrugations and remoteness of this country. Communications are essential since this road is not very heavily travelled. Sometimes this track sees no cars for more than three weeks. On the section from Warburton to Carnegie we didn't see anyone for nearly two days...

The Gunbarrel Highway was constucted in the late fifties by surveyor Len Beadell and his party, as a major service road for the rocket program undertaken at Woomera. It has not been maintained for more than 40 years and has many deep washouts and heavy corrugations.
