Tasmania - Marsupials

Tasmania is home to a large number of marsupials, of which the Kangaroo, Wallaby, Koala, Wombat and Tasmanian Devil are the best known. However, there are many more species, often nocturnal, and invisible to the general traveller. A few of these rare species are shown on this page.

The Thylacine or Tasmanian Tiger. The Thylacine is believed to be extinct. The last animal kept in captivity died in 1936 in the Hobart Zoo.

However, many people since have reported sightings or found tracks or droppings. More useful information can be found on the website of Tasmanian-Tiger.com

Extinct or not extinct - attempts are currently being made by scientists of the Australian Museum in Sydney to clone the Thylacine from preserved material containing DNA. Click here to read more.
